The Guthrie on the River; Minneapolis, Minnesota
The new Guthrie Theater is a 250,000 square foot facility with three areas of performance. The Thrust Theater contains 1,100 seats, the Proscenium Theater contains 700 seats, and the Black Box Theater has seating for 250 patrons. The Guthrie as designed by Jean Nouvel, of Paris, France, is most noted for its extended lobby which is a 178'-0" cantilever. The cantilevered lobby is the longest cantilever of occupied space known toexist. The "Endless Bridge" as the cantilever is called, has the equivalent height of a 14 story office building if it were extended vertically. In addition, the Bridge has capacity for approximately 1650 people to view the Mississippi River from thirty-five feet above the ground. In order to support the intended loads on the bridge, the structure must resist approximately 15 million pounds of overturning forces!!
