United States Federal Courthouse; Minneapolis, Minnesota

This fifteen story, 465,000 SF building is the home of the United States Federal Court System. In addition to the eleven district courtrooms, other tenants include the U.S. District Court, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The courthouse has three levels of underground parking. This design-build project had a construction budget of $100 million.

The Minneapolis Federal Courthouse features a twelve story curved exterior wall. The project was awarded after a national design-build competition to a team featuring the design architect Kohn, Pedersen and Fox of New York and the Architectural Alliance. The north elevation wall was curved to present the best views from the Judges offices of the Mississippi River. The sloped perimeter columns allowed the design to provide maximum floor space and to present this view unobstructed. The front elevation of the building is curved horizontally to focus on the classic structure of City Hall and its clock tower. It also features a unique eyebrow element which posed a challenge structurally due to its cantilever and slender design.

Many state-of-the-art security systems were employed in this project. For instance, there is a complete separation of the Judges, the Public and the Prisoners. The Judges have separate parking and elevators. The Plaza in the front of the building provides security from possible terrorist attacks by blocking the front entry from any vehicle approach. In addition, State of the Art communication systems have been installed in the Courtrooms and the Offices. The building has an intricate cellular duct system placed on the steel deck and cast into the floors as opposed to being run through the walls and ceiling plenum. This communication system created complexity in design in that it interrupted the composite action of the floor deck and created special load cases
